To qualify for membership in the UDLA, an attorney must be a member in good standing with the Utah State Bar. The attorney must devote a substantial portion of his or her professional time to the representation of individual defendants or businesses in civil litigation. The UDLA’s membership year runs from January 1 to December 31 yearly. Dues are not pro-rated during the course of the membership year. Because UDLA is a 501(c)(6) association, membership dues are not deductable as a charitable expense but may be deducted as a business expense.
